Leif Eriksson was A very famous Viking.he was born in Iceland around 960 AD. This famous Viking is the second son of Erik the Red.
Leif spent many childhood years away from home. He was put in the care of his fathers german slave, A man named Thyrker. He taught Leif how to reconize valuable plants. Finally, Leif was taught how to be a skilled worrior, and trader.
At last Leif set sail on his own.his intended route was to Norway. To bring gifts to king Olaf.Unfortunately Leif was blown off cource, because of the harsh weather.Instead he landed up in Scotland. While in Scotland he found A wife and had A son. He then continued to Norway and successfuly delivered the gifts to king Olaf.
Leif Eriksson is responsible for bringing christianity to all the Vikings.King Olaf was very impressed with Leif, and shared him the meaning of christianity. As A resalt Leif was baptized. When he went home Leif brought A priest with him , to spread the message to the vikings.
Inspired by an explorer named Bjarni,he set out on A voyage with A crew of thirty four men. Leif had heard Bjarni speak of lands rich in timber , salman , and grasses. He wanted to find this knew land so he left Greenland and traveled west, where he stumbled across A land full of flat stones. This land could not be settled in because it was covered in ice. This land was named Helluland. Which means ''land of flat stones''.Helluland is naw known Baffin island.
After the discovery helluland , Leif sailed southward. Here he discovered A land covered in wood.He then named this land Markland. Which means ''land covered in wood''. This erea did not mach the discription of Bjarni`s new land, so the crew moved on.Also markland was very cold, and the trees wernt as plentiful. markland is naw known Labrador.
Finally , Leif traveled soutyh to AS land that he was pleased with. Leif thought this land fit Bjarni`s discription, it was rich in timber, salmon, grape vines, and open fields. This land was cald Vinland. Meaning ''land covered in vines''. Vinland is naw cald L`Ance aux meadows, which is in the northern tips of Newfoundland. Leif stayed in Vinland for the winter, and returned to Iceland in the winter with a ship full of goods. In conclusion, Leif the lucky earned his nick name, because he did not get lost on his return from Vinland.
